It was gathered that on Saturday afternoon at NEW BANNEX PLAZA an Electronics and Telecommunication gadgets Market Abuja, there was a conflict between some men of the Nigerian Army and some Traders.
Southwest News gathered that Some soldiers came to complain about a phone, which led to argument and altercation in which a fight ensued between the soldiers and the Traders.
A viral video seen on that Saturday revealed how a multitude of the Traders overpowered the soldiers during the fight, which led to them injuring the soldiers on uniform.
It was later gathered that one Suleiman Ahmed who had earlier gotten a phone from one Suleiman Ibrahim who is said to be a shop owner at the Complex went in company of four soldiers to persuade the seller to replace the phone due to the discovery that the phone is faulty. This met with a resistance of the shop owner and resulted into confrontation and squabble with the military personnel, which led to attack on the personnel which led to uproar and injury to the military personnel.
Later in the day, Personnel of the Nigerian Army mobilized and reportedly stormed the New Bannex Plaza in a reprisal attack for the earlier fight that led to the injury of their fellow personnel.
The FCT police spokesperson in his statement said, “Following a reported unrest at Bannex Plaza today being May 18, 2024 at about 01:30 PM, involving some occupants of the plaza, customers and some soldiers, operatives of the FCT police command, swiftly mobilized to scene, assessed situation and restored order”
“All parties were invited for questioning, the military personnel have been handed over to their organisation for necessary action to be taken”
“While normalcy has since been restored in Bannex and its environs, the Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth Igweh, urges residents to peacefully go about their lawful businesses without fear from any quarters.”
