President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to establish marine police, solid mineral police, and better-trained forest guards to enhance Nigeria’s security architecture.
At a meeting with All Progressives Congress governors in Abuja, Tinubu mentioned three new police formations to augment regular police. Forest guards will be deployed with better training, modern technology, and weapons to strengthen security. Special police will also secure the solid mineral and marine economic sectors. Tinubu expressed his readiness to invest in security, citing the country’s large marine economy as a reason to establish marine police.
However, marine police currently exist as an arm of the Nigeria Police Force, established in 1891 in Lagos. The Marine Section, a branch of the ‘B’ Department of the Force, has 81 Marine Stations and Outposts spread across the country’s inland navigable rivers and waterways.
Nigeria’s President Tinubu has announced plans to stock the nation’s mineral resources, particularly gold, in reserves. The President has set up a constitutional review committee to carry out comprehensive police reforms.
The Nigeria Police Council confirmed Olukayode Egbetokun as the substantive Inspector-General of Police. The committee includes Ibrahim Geidam, Minister of Police Affairs; Nuhu Ribadu, National Security Adviser; Solomon Arase, Chairman of the Police Service Commission; and AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, governor of Kwara State and chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum. The committee aims to bring harmony and synergy to the Nigerian Police Force by closing technology and manpower gaps in the 1999 constitution.
The committee comprises the minister of police affairs, NSA, chairman of PSC, and chairman of the NGF, working together to ensure the Nigeria PolTinubu proposes creation of marine police despite existing unitice is reformed.
